Grizzly Folk albums and recordings

As the Grizzly Folk, we have recorded two full albums and three EPs (as of December 2016). Two of the EPs have long since vanished, and we’re not even sure if we have copies anymore. (If you ever see either of them, please do let us know. They’ve been away from home for too damn long.)

The best way to buy Grizzly Folk albums is via our Bandcamp page. That way, your money goes straight to us, which means we can fund the upkeep of this website for a little longer. However, if you’re not a Bandcamp user, we understand. We’re also available in the places linked below.

Baibaba Bimba EP (2016)

This was recorded towards the end of summer 2016 and features Jon Wilks and Jon Nice. The title track is a cover of a song by one of our favourite groups, the Japanese duo, Tenniscoats. It also features a song that appears to be about the Pendle witches (‘The Liminal Hours’, the lyrics to which were partially dreamt into being during a slow train ride to Norfolk) and a track that began life as a drum and piano recording made in Fukuoka, Japan, in 2008, and was finished during a wet weekend in Norfolk in 2016 (‘Meet Me at Nine’).

Tracklisting…

1. Baibaba Bimba
2. The Liminal Hours
3. Meet Me at Nine
4. Baibaba Bimba (acoustic version)

Lairy Through the Town (2015)

Lairy Through the Town was recorded in Hampshire and Norfolk towards the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015. It was released in February of that year. The musicians featured include Jon Wilks, Jon Nice, Stephen Field, Dave Borgeson and Ricky Banks, while Richard Lines takes all but two of the lead vocals. The majority of the songs were written by Jon Wilks, Jon Nice and Richard Lines, with the exception of ‘Katie Cruel’ (a traditional song made popular by Karen Dalton) and ‘The Franco-Belgian Border’ (written by Anna Byrne). Despite our band name, we have to hold our hands up and say that if you’re expecting folk, you’ll be a tad disappointed. It’s probably the rockiest thing we’ve ever done.

Tracklisting…

1. The Ghost of Johnny Hallyday
2. Lairy Through the Town (Often They Would Go)
3. Gotta Keep an Eye on My Lover
4. The Franco-Belgian Border
5. Cold Weather
6. Do You Lie?

8. All This Rigor Mortis
9. Katie Cruel

Gurning at the Moon (2013)

Written and recorded largely by Jon Wilks and Jon Nice in Fukuoka, Japan, and Hampshire, UK, this ragtag collection also features the musicianship of Dai Evans, Em Kuntze and Kanako Matsushima. It also features songs from the 5-Weight and Electric Grizzle EPs, which is lucky given that they wouldn’t be available otherwise. Gurning at the Moon is also home to our one and only Christmas hit, ‘The Wassailing Song‘.

3. Milo’s Tune

Electric Grizzle EP (2009)

Electric Grizzle was the second collection of songs we put together – perhaps a little less ‘experimental’ than the first. It featured the singing skills of Em Kuntze and Dai Evans, and the songwriting and musicianship of Jons Nice and Wilks. It no longer exists, hence the lack of cover or links below, but as far as we recall the tracklisting went something like this…

Tracklisting…

1. Mixtapes
2. These are the End Days
3. Friday Night
4. Supernatural Gumboots
5. Gotta Keep an Eye on My Lover

5-Weight EP (2008)

The first collection of songs we recorded was done in Fukuoka in the heady days of 2008. It featured Jon Nice, Jon Wilks, Em Kuntze and Kanako Matsushima. We think it probably lived on MySpace for a while – it’s that old. We’ve not seen it in a very long time. We doubt we’re missing much, though. About the only thing we liked about it was the title (although it did have ‘The Wassailing Song’ on it, and that has served us very well since).

Tracklisting…

1. The “I Don’t Know” Song
2. The Wassailing Song
3. Stick Dance at Grizzly Central
4. The Colonel’s Pantry
5. Don’t Blame Me
6. The Wilds of JB Purvis
